The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers one of the world's most prestigious fellowships. Designed for researchers of all nationalities and disciplines, this fully funded opportunity allows you to conduct long-term research (6 to 24 months) at a research institution in Germany.
Fellowship Categories & Funding
The fellowship is divided into two distinct categories based on your academic career stage, offering generous monthly stipends:
- • PhD completed within the last 4 years
- • €3,000 / month stipend
- • Duration: 6 to 24 months
- • PhD completed within the last 12 years
- • €3,600 / month stipend
- • Duration: 6 to 18 months

Key Eligibility Requirements
- 1. German Host Professor: You must have a mentoring agreement from an academic host at a research institution in Germany.
- 2. Academic Excellence: A strong record of publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
- 3. Research Proposal: A highly detailed, 5-page research outline developed by you and agreed upon with your host.
- 4. Expert Reviews: Two expert reviews, including one from your PhD supervisor.
- 5. Residency Rule: You must have lived outside Germany for more than 12 of the last 18 months.
- 6. Language Skills: Good knowledge of English (or German, depending on your research field).
Insider Tip: High Competition
Selection committee meetings are held three times a year (March, July, November). However, the foundation employs an application cap. Calls close early as soon as 800 applications arrive. The next round opens on November 15, 2026. Secure your host immediately and apply on day one!
